action alert: jekyll island bill in georgia house

Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 04:06:53 AM PDT

seaturtles has a running series on the ongoing saga of the attempt to keep overdevelopment away from jekyll island, georgia.

my parents live on jekyll, and i lived there as a kid, so it's an issue close to my heart.

anyway, to cut to the chase, the jekyll island citizens association (JICA) just sent out this email blast, and i thought i'd get it out to a wider audience.

please remember, if you're going to call any legislators, be unfailingly polite and courteous.  how you present yourself is as important as what you say!

VA House of Delegates closer to Dem. control

Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 09:22:13 AM PDT

In the last election, Democrats won control of the Senate in Virginia, and gained seats in the lower house.

Yesterday, Democrats increased their numbers to 45 (out of 100) in the House of Delegates.  See this article from the WaPo.

how much is the clintons' DC home worth?

Tue Jan 22, 2008 at 09:36:19 PM PDT

i'll keep this short and sweet.  hillary clinton is not my first choice for president of the current crop of candidates, but if she is the nominee, i will support her.

with that out of the way, i just wanted to point something interesting out.

for how much should the clinton home here in DC be assessed?

is anyone else having a login problem?

Thu Dec 20, 2007 at 06:23:21 AM PDT

ok, this is going to be short and sweet.

i read dailykos from my home computer and the computer at my desk in my office.  the last few days, when i fire up my browser and bring up dailykos.com, i find that i haven't stayed logged in.  i've been having to re-login every time i get to the site for about 3 days now, and i'm wondering if someone on the business end of things is resetting something.  (i'm sorry i'm not more articulate in the necessary password/cookie/security terms.)

am i imagining things, or was this a problem a few months ago when there were concerns about accounts being hijacked?  anyway, advice would be appreciated, or just an acknowledgment from someone in the know.  thanks!

OH-05: brownsox, kos, and RandySF didn't push GOTV enough

Mon Dec 03, 2007 at 07:48:09 PM PDT

after seeing this diary by RandySF this morning, i set out to figure out exactly where the 5th district was in ohio, so i went to wikipedia and typed in 'ohio 5th district'.

at the bottom of the page is a chart of vote totals in the district since the 1920 election.  the most interesting thing is the last two lines, where weirauch and gillmor faced off in both of those elections.  it was interesting that, even in the 2006 'wave' election, robin weirauch got almost exactly the same number of votes she did in 2004 (95,481 vs. 95,955) yet gillmor's vote total crashed from 194,559 to 126,898.

i'm sure some of that had to do with 2004 being a presidential election year, and 2006 being the off year.  and some of it had to do with disaffected republicans staying home.  but it seems like democrats maxed out their totals here.

fulfilling a request for david78209 about the WaPo ombudsman

Sat Dec 01, 2007 at 09:31:11 AM PDT

yesterday, i posted a diary about tom toles' cartoon in the washington post that took the paper to task for writing a front page story giving wider attention to mere internet rumors about barack obama.

in the comments for that diary, user david78209 asked me if i would "do another diary to tell us the pleasant surprise if their ombudsman does indeed reprimand the paper for printing that story"

well, it looks like that's going to have to wait for another week.

will the washington post's ombudsman actually cover the obama story in next week's column?

WaPo's own cartoonist slams paper for Obama "rumors" (updated)

Fri Nov 30, 2007 at 04:53:33 AM PDT

This is going to be short, and if someone else has already posted about this, please let me know and I'll take it down.

Tom Toles, the Washington Post's editorial cartoonist, gives a body slam to the paper and Perry Bacon for their Obama coverage yesterday:

Check out the cartoon here.

My personal opinion is that this is one of Toles' best this year.

why bill richardson just fell down a notch

Thu Oct 11, 2007 at 06:44:59 PM PDT

i haven't made up my mind who i'd like to support for president in 2008 yet, but this article in the lansing state journal just gave him a HUGE number of demerits in my mind.

hate group on michigan state campus rides again

Thu Sep 13, 2007 at 05:40:02 PM PDT

this diary by kossack sidwood highlighted a group on the michigan state university campus known as the young americans for freedom (i won't link to them here, but their national website is funny in that it's talking about reagan's death as if it's recent news.

Evidence of war with Iran buried in Answer Man's WaPo column?

Tue Jul 24, 2007 at 04:28:53 AM PDT

If you're an avid reader of local news in the Washington Post, like I am, you're familiar with John Kelly, the Answer Man, and his column in the Style section.  John is leaving for a sabbatical in Oxford soon, and will be gone for a year.  But this is one heck of an interesting bit of news he writes about in his column today:

Titled The Whir Before the War,  this article is typical Kelly, irreverent but informative.  Here's a quick sample:

Ray has lived in [the Palisades] for 39 years. He's had a lot of time to make some detailed observations of its various rhythms. One thing he's noticed is that every major U.S. military action was preceded by increased helicopter traffic over his house, as choppers shuttled people back and forth between the Pentagon and CIA headquarters, which is across the Potomac River from where he lives.

Take what you will from this, but could Mr. Kelly and Ray Lustig be on to something?  Or is it just the salad bar?

Josh Bolten tells DC Mayor Fenty to shut up...

Wed Apr 11, 2007 at 12:39:33 PM PDT

....about DC voting rights.

Now, I'm a citizen of DC, and most of you here are aware of the fact that the District does not have full voting representation in Congress.  If you've been following this saga lately, you know that DC Vote, the District Government, and many many other organizations are organizing a march on the Capitol on Monday, April 16th (Emancipation Day) to demand voting rights for the citizens of the District.

Mark Plotkin, a local political reporter for WTOP news does weekly chats on the Washington Post's website, and in the course of his Tuesday (April 10th) chat, he revealed a real doozy.

petition to save internet radio

Tue Mar 06, 2007 at 07:50:24 AM PDT

ok, the good folks at radio paradise and other internet radio stations have gotten together and decided to put up a petition and begin an informational drive to get folks to petition congress and make them aware of how this decision could negatively affect the future of internet radio.  here's where you need to go to help make a difference:

save our internet radio

Mon Mar 05, 2007 at 06:25:13 AM PDT

this is a post taken from my personal blog, bloomingdale (for now).  i believe this is a relevant political issue that this community can really rally around.

alright, i'd like to enlist other blogs and people out there to pay attention to an important issue: the future of internet radio.

some quick background: i listen to radio paradise every day at work.  it's the soundtrack to my day, and without the quality music running in the background, each day in my cube would be enormously less interesting.  i am a supporting listener of radio paradise, meaning that i've donated money to bill and rebecca goldsmith to help keep their great station running.  now, bill has let all the listeners know that a new ruling from the u.s. copyright office could shut down radio paradise, as well as other internet radio stations, because the fees would be more than they could possibly handle.
